Jaclyn Negrete of La Vista was awarded the 2022 Mia Taylor Environmental Sustainability Scholarship at College of Saint Mary last month. The scholarship was presented by Mia’s father, Shane Taylor.
Negrete, who will be a senior this fall, is a human biology major with a minor in environmental sustainability. She appreciated receiving the assistance toward her education. She hopes to become a physician assistant.
“I’ve heard so many stories about Mia and how passionate she was about sustainability and that’s really where my heart is as well,” Negrete said.
The scholarship was endowed on Earth Day 2022. Negrete is the second recipient. “It’s keeping Mia’s memory alive for generations to come,” Shane said. “It’s contributing to her passion and her legacy beyond my time here and giving back to students who are just as passionate about the environment as she was.”
Mia Taylor was a sophomore pre-med major with a minor in environmental sustainability when she passed away. She was also the president of CSM’s “Green Team,” the environmental sustainability group on campus, where she traveled to NASA to further her education relating to environmental sustainability and the benefits of global recycling.
