Mavericks Fall to Huskers

The Mavericks and Huskers played each other for the first time since the 2014-15 season Thursday night. Despite getting within five of Nebraska late in the first half, Omaha fell to its in-state rival, 75-61.

The Mavericks fall to 0-2 on the year.

Leaders for Omaha
Jaeden Marshall and MArquel Sutton were the only Mavericks who scored double figures on the night, and both season-highs. Marshall led the team with 16 points on 6-of-13 from the field. He shot nearly 50 percent from deep. Sutton added 14 points on 7-of-13 from the field.

Sutton and Kennedy Brown each tallied six rebounds to lead Omaha, while Ja'Sean Glover had a team-high three assists. Tony Osburn recorded two steals, while Frankie Fidler and Osburn each had a block.

Leaders for Nebraska
Nebraska's leading scorer was CJ Wilcher. He finished 8-of-12 on the night with four three-pointers for 21 points. Emmanuel Bandoumel and Sam Griesel each added 18 points. Griesel was 8-of-12 from the charity stripe and added seven rebounds and three assists.

Blaise Keita crashed the boards for a game-high 12 rebounds.

Team Stats
Both teams shot over 40 percent Thursday. Omaha connected on 41.4 percent of their shots, while Nebraska hit exactly 50 percent of their attempts. Both teams battled in the paint with the Huskers narrowly edging the Mavericks, 36-34. Nebraska held advantaged on second chance points (14-7) and points off turnovers (13-8), while Omaha's bench outscored Nebraska's (21-9) and put away more second chance points (14-7).

The Mavericks and Huskers each tallied 35 rebounds.

Inside the First Half
The Huskers scored 11 unanswered points to start the game Thursday night before a jumper from Sutton snapped the run. Nebraska didn't lay off the gas and extended its lead to 17 points by the 9:08 mark.

The Mavericks began to find their stride and put together a 14-2 run spanning from the 7:37 to the 4:26 mark. Sutton sparked the run with a layup that led to Marshall and Fidler helping Omaha get within five of the Huskers. Marshall closed the run with a three-pointer, while Brown drove in for a layup a minute later to keep it within five. The half closed with an 8-4 run in favor of Nebraska. Sutton had a buzzer beating dunk to end the first, and the Mavericks trailed by 10, 41-31.

Inside the Second Half
Omaha hung with Nebraska for much of the second half getting within single digits of the Huskers four times. Marshall and Fidler got it within nine in the opening three minutes, but momentum swung in favor of Nebraska who led by 16 at the 13:12 mark. The Mavericks slowly chipped away with help from Sutton, Luke Jungers, and Marshall to get it back to eight. Marshall hit a three just under the 10-minute mark to cut the lead, 55-47. He was fouled on the play and netted the free throw to make it a seven-point lead.

That was the closest Omaha got for the remainder of the game. Nebraska used eight late free throws to pull away and earned the 75-61 win over Omaha.
