The Creighton Baseball team won a marathon contest, five hours and seven minutes, in 14 innings as the Blue jays scored eight runs in the top of the frame to earn a 13-6 victory over Wichita State on Saturday, March 18.
The win pushed Creighton to 7-6 on the season, while the Shockers fell to 9-8 overall.
Knotted at 5-5 from the end of regulation, the Blue jays broke through in the 14th as junior Nolan Clifford smacked a leadoff double down the right line, moved to third via a sacrifice and scored on an RBI single from freshman Ben North. With the lead in hand the Blue jays tacked on seven more runs in the frame, getting a two-run double from senior Sterling Hays, an RBI grounder from grad transfer Ben Gbur to make it 9-5. The runs continued as Creighton scored on an error off Clifford's bat and sophomore Hogan Hellig so blasted a three-run double to center to make it 13-5. Wichita State got an unearned run in the bottom half, but the Blue jays seized the win.
Creighton reliever Marc Lidd earned the victory (1-0), with 2.2 innings of scoreless reliver, while sophomore Malakai Vetock closed the game out in the 14th. Wichita State reliever Carter Rost took the loss (0-1), allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Early in the game the Shockers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second, with Creighton pulling even with a tally in the fifth. The Blue jays' first run came on a two-out walk to Gbur, a stolen base and an RBI double from sophomore Nolan Sailors. One frame later Creighton seized the lead with a two-run single from Hayes.
Hayes and North each closed the game with three hits, while Hayes delivered four RBI,
