Med center planning events to mark Earth Month

WRITTEN BY Verdis Group PUBLISHED March 24, 2023April 22 is Earth Day, and the med center is celebrating all April long.This year, the med center is participating in the Earth Month Ecochallenge, will hold two campus cleanups and a tree-planting ceremony and offer a webinar on sustainable design in campus development.The annual personal recycling and shredding event is scheduled for April 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and April 19 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.It will be held at the UNMC Grounds Building (annex 23) in Lot 17, 4650 Jones St. Enter by turning north onto 45th Street from Leavenworth Street. Follow the signs northwest to the grounds building. Enter on the south side, exit to the north onto Saddle Creek Road. Click here to see a map.

People dropping off items must be UNMC, Nebraska Medicine, University of Nebraska at Omaha or Clarkson College faculty, staff or student. A valid ID badge is required.

Paper and electronics are accepted for recycling. Items must be separated by category — containers with mixed items will not be accepted. Paper can be in totes, boxes or paper bags; totes and boxes will be returned.

Many small electronics, including cell phones and hand-held devices, are accepted for recycling without a fee. Other electronics, including computers and TVs, have a recycling fee. See the website for details.

Seedlings and wildflower seed packets will be available, courtesy of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District. Anyone interested in volunteering at the event can sign up here.

  • Ecochallenge: All month | Online
    Join the Earth Month Ecochallenge and pledge to take simple individual actions that help make collective progress. Click here to join the med center team and earn points. Top scoring participants will be recognized and receive a prize at the end of the month.
  • Campus cleanups: April 4 and April 13, 12-1 p.m. | Locations TBD
    Help pick up trash around campus over lunchtime during one of two litter cleanups. Locations are TBD. Sign up here to receive details.
  • “Resilience in New Development” webinar: April 11, 12-1 p.m. | Virtual
    Chad Kruse and Kelly Johnson will join Sustainability Manager Jerrod Bley to discuss how new development on campus incorporates sustainable design guidelines and impacts the med center’s sustainability goals. Click here to register.
  • Arbor Day tree planting ceremony and presentation: April 27, 12-1 p.m. | Location TBD
    Graham Herbst, community forestry specialist for eastern Nebraska for the Nebraska Forest Service, will join the biannual tree planting ceremony to present about the benefits of trees, especially for community resilience and health.
