Battling mist and light rain throughout the game, the Bluejay' bats stormed out to a 15-5 win over BYU in seven innings on Saturday, March 11.
The victory pushed Creighton to 6-5 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 4-10.
After moving the series from Omaha to Lawrence in the hope of playing on Saturday, the Bluejays and Cougars pushed back the start of the contest to 1:00 p.m. (CT).
Once the game got going Creighton starter Justin Kleinsorge delivered a quick top of the first and the Bluejay offense went to work. Creighton scored four runs in the bottom of the first on four hits. Sophomore Nolan Sailors lined a leadoff double to right-center, then with one down junior Nolan Clifford walked. Senior Sterling Hayes got Creighton on the board with an RBI double to left, then freshman Ben North blasted a three-run home run to right center to make it 4-0.
The Bluejays tacked on two runs in the second and third to build an 8-0 edge heading into the fourth. Senior Andrew Meggs lifted a two-run single to right in the second, while sophomore Hogan Helligso launched a two-run homer to left-center in the third.
BYU got on the board with four runs on a pair of long balls in the fourth, but Creighton answered with two more in the fourth on an RBI grounder from Hayes and an RBI single by senior Jack Grace.
The Cougars scratched across a run in the fifth, only to see Creighton score five runs in the bottom half. The highlight of the Bluejays' five-run fifth was a three-run pinch-hit home run for grad transfer Ben Gbur.
Freshman Anthony Watts earned the win (1-1) with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, while BYU starter Bryce Robison took the loss (1-1). Robison allowed eight runs on eight hits in three innings.
From the third inning of the series opener through the fifth inning on Saturday, Creighton scored in 11-consecutive frames.
On Saturday Hayes guided the Creighton offense with two hits (2-for-4), two runs scored and four RBI.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 15 in the Bluejays' home opener against Kansas State at 6:00 p.m.
