Celebratory gunfire remains a problem in many cities, particularly during the holiday season, and sadly, it can often have tragic results when innocent people are hit by the bullets and injured or killed. Any bullet discharged from a gun, even into the sky, must land at some location, and the risks are significant for injury or death.

The Omaha Police Department and the City of Omaha are committed to its policy of zero tolerance of illegal gun use and its initiative to combat gun violence in our community. During the holidays, we want to remind the public that discharging a firearm within the city limits is not only illegal but potentially deadly and any violators will be arrested. 

We would also like to remind citizens of the city’s fireworks ordinance. Per city ordinance 20-320, consumer fireworks may be discharged in Omaha from 5 p.m. on December 31st, through 1 a.m. on January 1st. You must be 16 years or older to possess, use or discharge consumer fireworks, but minors between 12-15 years old may discharge consumer fireworks if under the direct supervision of an adult who is at least 19 years old. Those found in violation of this ordinance risk being cited for a criminal violation.
