The House of Representatives passed the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), H.R. 354, today, with a vote of 221-185. The bill, introduced by Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02), received support from eighteen original Republican cosponsors and an additional twenty-four Republicans.

The legislation aims to eliminate existing prohibitions and enable trained professionals to respond promptly to emergencies in public places such as shopping malls, school zones, and mass transit.

"LEOSA offers real solutions to address threats such as terrorism and mass shootings by ensuring that our retired and off-duty law enforcement officers can exercise their right to concealed carry – no matter where they live or visit," said Bacon. "These measured changes will make existing law stronger and more workable for those who seek its benefits while maintaining the rigorous standards that currently apply."

Bacon also expressed gratitude towards Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan for his assistance in guiding the legislation to passage. "His support was meaningful and appreciated," Bacon noted.

Local sheriffs from Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District have shown their support for the legislation: Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson, Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis, and Saunders County Sheriff Kyle Coughlin.

Furthermore, the bill has been endorsed by numerous law enforcement organizations including the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), The Air Marshal Association, FBI Agents Association (FBIAA), International Union of Police Associations, Major Cities Chiefs Association, National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), San Francisco Veteran Police Officers Association, Special Police Organization of New Jersey, and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
